In this marine scene Simon de Vlieger painted a specific ship, the Amelia, which had been removed from service in the Dutch fleet shortly before this work was produced. The Amelia was Admiral Marten Tromp's flagship and the Admiral himself might be the figure standing in the boat to the left, being rowed to his ship. Vlieger has carefully reproduced the ships detailing and decoration, including the two figures of Fame supporting a coat-of-arms on the stern.
