This is a pleasing portrait of a boy, whip in hand pretending to ride a dog like a horse. The group of buildings at the left of the picture is Italianate in style.
The figure of the boy is in relatively good condition but that of the dog is damaged and has undergone considerable alteration, either at the hand of the artist or by some other artist or restorer at a later date.
Among the principal visual characteristics which would enable us to date this painting approximately, are trhe boy's hairstyle and the colour as well as the cut of his clothes. However a more precise guide is the probability that this is the picture exhibited by the artist at the Salon of 1802 under the title, 'Un portrait d'enfant jouant avec un chien'.
