Grandfather of Mrs. Bowes, commanded a Battalion in the Vendean War during the French Revolution. On his return to Paris he was falsely accused and condemned to death in 1792 but escaped the guillotine. Said to have been taken when he was imprisoned in 1792, and then later copied with the painting in oil on canvas.
