Courbet, the son of a farmer, remained close to his rural origins and returned from Paris to his birthplace, Ornans, to paint the landscape. As with this scene, many of his landscapes generally concentrate on rocky hillsides and bushy trees. They were frequently painted in heavy impasto (thick paint) often applied with a palette knife. This distinctive style became the artist’s trademark.
