Dress of white embroidered muslin, 1868-70 The embroidery is tambour work, a fine chainstitch worked by hand with a tambour hook. The fabric was probably produced in India. In the 1860s, white embroidered muslin was a favourite choice for summer, often worn over a coloured silk lining and then trimmed with ribbons to match the silk.
