St. Mark is attended by a winged lion. In real life he was a cousin of St. Barnabas and a friend of St. Paul. He travelled to Asia Minor (Turkey), Cyprus and Rome with these two men, on missionary work (Acts of the Apostles). His Gospel was probably written in Rome. What is reputed to be his body is buried in St. Mark's Cathedral, Venice. The city of Venice uses his symbol of the winged lion.
