The painting depicts an episode from St John's Gospel which follows Christ's resurrection. On their return to Galilee the disciples recognise Christ after he helped them catch a miraculously large number of fish. Jesus stands next to a fire where a fish is being cooked. He awaits Peter, who has left his boat and walks towards the shore through the sea, his arms raised in a gesture of joy and recognition. In the background the daily activities of a fishing village continue in a fantastical landscape with ruins, which is painted in the tradition of Joachim Patinir.
