Philippe de Champaigne was born in Brussels, where he received his early training as an artist. In 1621 he went to Paris and worked for a while with Nicolas Poussin. He was patronised by Marie de Médici, Louis XIII and Richelieu. He is most celebrated as a portraitist but was also an eminent history painter.
He married Charlotte Duchesne (1613-1638), daughter of the painter Nicolas Duchesne, in 1628. This portrait of his wife may have been painted shortly after the couple’s marriage.
