In this painting Taillasson recalls the Roman festival Floralia, also known as the Florifertum, which celebrated the return of spring. The festivities included dancing, drinking, a set of games and theatrical presentations known as the Ludi Florales.
The young goddess Flora is borne along on a cloud blown by butterfly-winged heads of little zephyrs (light breezes). To signify the new life that spring brings, she sprinkles flowers and leads Cupid along by the hand.
