Frames and Glazed Picture, Sir Joshua Reynolds' Self Portrait.
Large framed. glazed and backed embroidered picture probably worked on canvas in wool, with a very little silk in the highlights, all in long and short stitch, following the lines of the design. The picture is taken from the self-portrait of Sir Joshua Reynolds in the National Portrait Gallery. It shows him against a rightly indicated background of stormy sky and trees, three-quarters face, looking over his right shoulder and outstretched arm, wearing a high frilled stock and a full sleeves red garment with pink bands (possibly academic robes?), his hair is medium length, unpowered, and brushed back in curls.
John Bowes Collection, listed in the old typed catalogue and in the MS. catalogue as No.74, also found with number stuck on front E.12
