Ziem’s initial training was as an architect in Dijon before taking up watercolour painting in Marseilles. In 1839 he gained the patronage of the Duc d’Orleans and took landscape as his main theme. Ziem was an artist who travelled widely, as far as Russia and Turkey, in search of subjects for his paintings.
He was greatly influenced by the Barbizon school of painters, and consequently developed a broad, looser style of painting. This picture is an example of Ziem’s freer style, and dates from his early career as a painter. The depiction of a windmill above a deserted snowy hilltop is very moving, conjuring up feelings of isolation.
