Bonvin was born in Vaugirard, Paris. Although largely self taught, he received some training, first as a printer and later at the Academie Suisse. He also had contact with the painter Francois Marius Granet (1775-1849), who Bonvin considered his master.
Bonvin established himself as a painter of everyday life. His work often featured cottage interiors that echoed Dutch genre painting and included still life details demonstrating the concurrent influence of the eighteenth century French artist, Chardin.
Bonvin was a prominent artist in the French Realist movement during the mid-to-late nineteenth century.
