This fine piece of silverwork is first recorded in the Mechanical Museum of James Cox, a London showman and dealer, in 1774. The swan appears to preen itself and then bend its neck and take a fish from the water. The works may be by John Joseph Merlin, a famous inventor of the time. The swan was exhibited at the Paris International Exhibition in 1867 and bought by John Bowes in 1872
